2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA (2025) DOC NYC 2025

Fate is more an excuse for making bad decisions
- Freak, a Ukrainian soldier

A document of the efforts of Ukrainia soldiers to go 2000 meters and retake the town of Andriivka from the Russians

This Oscar contending film is one of the most important films on the war in Ukraine war. I say that because the film is an unflinching look at life on the battlefield during a battle. Made up of  body camera footage and footage shot by the men on the front lines its the first film that shows us what the fighting is really like.

However as important as the film is I doin't think it's quite as great as it's probable Oscar short listing would indicate. Yes, the film is good, but there are these little things, such as a quiet score under everything that kind of take the edge off. The images and the emotion on the screen it doesn't need to be heightened.

Quibble aside, this is definitely worth a look either at DOC NYC or on PBS when it runs there at the end of November.
