David Carradine decided that in order to be closer to his daughter he would put her into a film based on the life of Mata Hari and film it over several years with each year's filming relating to the same period on Mata Hari's life.
This is one of the unexpected joys of DOC NYC. I wanted to see it because I like Carradine and I wanted to know about this lost project. What I got was something very different than what I expected. Yes, it's about the film, but it is also about so much more. This film says a lot to say about cinema, celebrity and most importantly family and how we can reconnect with them many years after.
I was kind of blown away. I sat there watching the film just letting it wash over me, and I found that I was really engaged with what was happening. I loved that this was not doing what I thought it would and instead tasking me somewhere better and more thoughtful. When it was done I wanted to go again.
This is one of the great films at DOC NYC. Its a film that any movie love should see.
