After a heart attack forces him to trthink his life, filmmaker Jeremy Xido returns to Detroit to reconnect with the African American family that adopted him. Along the way he finds the spirit of the city and how his strength came from his two families.
One of the great films of this year's DOC NYC is a glorious look at life. There are all these great people that when it was over I wanted to give everyone a hug.
That the film works as well as it does is due in large part to how Xido chooses to tell the story. A man who is just at home on stage as well as behind a camera, he has made a film that transscends the cinematic form to be something close to hanging out with a friend. Xido uses the tricks of a one man stage show and turns it into something that is greater than just a documentary film, but a living record of life.
I was moved
When the film was done I wanted to go again and I wanted to tell everyone I know who loves documentaries to go see it.
I don't know what to say other than see this sooner than later.
