SANTACON is about the creation of the annual event, focusing mostly on the early days when the group Cacophony put it together as a one shot for their members, only to see it grow by leaps and bounds…and eventually out of control (but they don’t really talk about that)
Living in New York I have had to deal with the annual
Santacon almost every year. While I have met some of the best people I have
ever met in my life during the annual invasion, I have also met some of the absolute
worst. While I can deal with it by getting the hell away from the Santas,
generally my feeling is I would shave my head with a cheese grater if it meant
I never had to experience it ever again. (I’ve seen too many bad Santas).
SANTACON the movie is good. It’s a good look at how the
annual event was created and started to spread out into the world. If that is
what you want, then this film is going to be for you.
The problem, at least for me is that anything outside of the
early days is kind of rushed through. I would have liked a deep discussion of
the problems the con causes and how cities and businesses want no part of it. I say that, because pretty much everyone I
know who doesn’t participate wants no part in it. I’m not saying that the film
needs to say it’s bad, only that there is this huge dark side that the film
keeps at bay.
Worth a look
