One of the best films at this year's DOC NYC is MY SUNNYSIDE about a trans man, Jo, and a trans woman, Allie, who fall in love. It is a wonderful film about two people finding a life together.
I don't know what to say, but this film had me misty all the way through. The film is the ultimate statement on how only the person matters is the one inside. It's one og the best portraits of people at the festival. You come away feeling like you know everyone on screen.
Beyond just being a great portrait of people the film is stunning position piece that what matters is the person inside and not the gender. I mean that as an amplificsation of Allie's statement that when she met Jo it was the first time gender didn't matter. It was just two souls talking and being. MY SUNNYSIDE is important in that within the relationship between Jo and Allie it is no longer about gender but just people. It is something that all the anti-trans people need to hear. And while I doubt that they willever watch MY SUNNYSIDE, the fact that the film exists means that maybe just maybe they will see it and learn something.
This is glorious filmmaking and a must see.
