THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS is a repeated punch in the face. It’s like being bludgeoned to death while watching deranged bunnies dance.
That may not seem right, after all the film is about school shootings, but everyone selling the things to keep your children safe are so happy to be making money from potentially dead kids it is like going into an alternate universe where it’s a great thing to have our children die.
The film is alternately a look at the industry that has sprung up in the wake school shootings, where everyone is happy to be selling things that will make them rich, and a look at the kids who are the targets who are deeply disturbed that they have to figure out how best to stay alive and whether they should go down fighting or not.
This film will give you whiplash and make you wonder how we got her.
The power of the film is in the fact that while all the adults not connected to schools seem to take the idea of random shooting in stride (hey this is the world now – and we can make money doing this) while all the kids and the teachers are scared shitless, as anyone who has a real danger hanging over their head would be. Growing up in the 60's and 70's I used to worry about the Soviet Union bombing us, but that was an amorphous threat thousands of miles away, not one that is from someone inside the community.
I will not debate how we got here, what’s the point? The crazies controlling guns are in charge of the asylum. What we need is to be shocked into making the killing stop and perhaps this film will go a long way to stop them from happening.
