Sonia Manzano, best known as “Maria” on Sesame Street talks about her life as we watch recreations and archival footage.
I liked this film, but I didn't love it. I so wanted to love this film that I had to sit on writing about it for several days just so I didn't pick on it out of spite.
DOn't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the film. Rather the film is so low key and so matter of fact that the film never quite generates the excitment it should have. This is a film about MARIA from SESAME STREET. I wanted something truly magical. Maria always gave me something magical.
Yes, this film is a celebration of Ms. Manzano, and it tells us everything we need to know, but it never gets much beyond the feeling of sitting in a chair and having her talk to us. For whatever reason the images never fully transport us to the places she tells us about.
It's good, it's really good, but I wanted great. (And yes I know that's my own problem- but it's freaking MARIA)
