Monster (2021) Tribeca 2021 Podcast

MONSTER is a three part podcast, the first of which is premiering at Tribeca. I've head the first episode and I'm curious how this all plays out.

It all beings when Tommy Bertelsen heads off to Europe to make his second movie, a schlocky horror film. However before that he was going to be the best man at the wedding of Troian Bellisario, his partner. However things don't go as planned and he ends up drugged & held captive in Latvia.

The story is told by Bertelsen who uses recreations and interviews with some of the people involved. It's not just an examination of what happened, nor an examination of his life but also he delves into the questions of memory and questions of what we think we know. The result is not just a hell of a story but also a story that gives us something to ponder when its done.

If you like compelling stories you may want to give MONSTER a shot.

Film director, producer, raconteur, and international man of mystery Ted Geoghegan has turned out more episodes of his podcast THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT. After not talking about Disney and Bruce Lee he is back with episodes not on Bela Lugosi, MGM and  Friday The 13th

As I said in my original piece this is exactly like sitting in a room and listening to Ted hold the floor and spin out tales. And since I have been there and watched Ted talk I swear to you this is the way it is, except if you were in the room with him you could ask him questions which will have him go off on a tangent, and then give you dirty looks for messing him up.

Yea this is as good as socially responsible movie podcasting gets short of putting Ted in an hazmat suit and having him over for dinner.

This is Not a Story About..." 📻 Forgotten stories of film history by Ted Geoghegan

Locked inside due to the Covid 19 insanity filmmaker Ted Geoghegan (WE ARE STILL HERE, MOHAWK) has started an online radio. As he said in the email he sent out:

In an attempt to find a creative outlet during this mess, I've started a heartfelt little radio show that I hope might give movie lovers some joy during these trying times. "This is Not a Story About..." is an NPR-inspired fireside story about cinema's forgotten corners, framed against stories or people that you're likely familiar with. Consider the title of each episode to be a hook for the "real" story.

This is great stuff. While I have not heard either complete episode yet (I am listening to the first episode as I am putting this piece together) I've know Ted for a decade and I can assure you the shows are exactly like sitting in a room with him and having him tell you story after story except he's not running up your bar tab as you buy him drinks to keep him talking. Best of all even if you think you know the story he's going to tell you, he's gonna throw you a curve and tell you something unexpected- which is what happened with the "Disney" tale.

I can't wait to get to the second episode and I'm hoping that Ted tells us many more stories not about whatever we think it's going to be about.

"This is Not a Story About..." is a classically-inspired modern radio program about the history of cinema written and hosted by filmmaker Ted Geoghegan. Each episode of the program begins as the story of someone or something in the world of film that cinephiles know quite well, but transforms into an expertly-researched tale about a new topic: one that can be closely-related or worlds away from where its story began.

"This is Not a Story About..." is edited, mixed, and produced by Adam Stovall.

The series' debut episode, "This is Not a Story About Walt Disney" follows young Walt as he struggles to make his way in the burgeoning world of animation, but transforms into the story of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a blockbuster cartoon icon who was stolen out from under Disney and locked away for a half-century before finding redemption in the most unlikely of places.

The second episode, "This is Not a Story About Bruce Lee" begins with the well-known life of martial arts' biggest name, using it as an introduction to the story of kung fu star Alexander Fu Sheng, whose incredible career in Hong Kong cinema was ultimately overshadowed by bigger names - and whose life and art deserve rediscovery.

The Unseen Films Podcast: Hot Takes on NYFF 2017: NO STONE UNTURNED

In this second of the NYFF Hot Takes Hubert and I try to discuss Alex Gibney's latest Film NO STONE UNTURNED, a film that he is happy can finally be seen by the public.  The film focuses on the 1994 Loughinisland massacre where two gunman burst into small pub and shot 11 people killing 6. While arrests were made no one was ever charged. And the families have been left hanging for the better part of 23 years for justice.

The podcast is an attempt to discuss the film, which we discover is rather tough because the construction of the film and the ever surprising revelations make it a film that is hard to discuss without spoiling the film.

A full review is coming from both Hubert and myself.

And for those who have been waiting for the film since it was pulled from the Tribeca Film Festival, we discuss the reasons behind it-as far as Gibney will tell us.

The Unseen Films Podcast: Hot Takes on NYFF 2017: SPOOR and BEFORE WE VANISH

There has been talk of an Unseen FiIms Podcast for a while now but there has been lots of motion but very little progress. However last week after the New York Film Festival Press screenings of SPOOR and BEFORE WE VANISH Hubert, on the clock for Flixist, and I grabbed an audio recorder and ducked into an alcove outside the NYPL Lincoln Center branch and recorded some hot takes on the two films which had just screened.

The recording called NYFF Hot Takes is the sort of thing that happens after most press screenings as we (and more often other friends) discuss the film(s) we had just seen. The recording is raw and off the cuff like our comments. It’s a moment in time capturing the pair of us trying to find the words that would become our reviews.

With the New York Film Festival in full swing we're going to try to do a few more of these, and hopefully drag in a few more friends along the way so keep reading and keep listening because more is coming.

The discussion of Den and Saw continues in a Geek Nation Killer:POV podcast

The article by Frank Grimes about Den the possible source for Saw continues to create debate. This time on the Killer POV podcast over at Geek Nation. Hosts Rob Galluzzo (FEARNET, Icons Of Fright), Rebekah McKendry (Fangoria) and Elric Kane (Inside Horror) begin their show with a discussion of the article and how earlier works of art influence later ones.
