Return to Homs (2014) Human Rights Watch 2014

Winner of numerous awards I missed this film when it played at New Directors New Films earlier this year and regretted it since word on it was so strong.

Return to Homs is the story of a group of Syrian rebels from 2011 to 2013. It is part documentary, part essay, and in a strange way partly a kind of poem. The film follows as the dreams of peaceful change are dashed (one friend of the filmmakers who holds a sign saying peaceful is killed) and the friends are forced to take up arms.

Its one of the best war documentaries I've seen recently and an absolute must see (or in my case see again)

I'm not going to try and sell you on the film. I'm not going try and discuss the deeper meanings of it all. You don't need me to do that. I'm just going to say go. Just go. See the film and be moved. Trust me on this, this is one you really want to see.

And yes I know you're tired of war or revolution films. How many films about Afghanistan or Iraq or Egypt or some other film about the various conflicts have you seen in the last couple of years that looked like all the others? Too many I'm guessing. After awhile they all blend together. There is no difference.

This is different. This one somehow magically rises to the top.

The film plays on the 13th and 14th. For tickets and information check the festival website.
