The Singularity starts Friday at Metrograph

"The Singularity" trailer - Beginning Friday March 17! from Metrograph on Vimeo.

Beginning Friday March 17, Metrograph will present "The Singularity," a series focusing on cyborgs and artificial intelligence, followed by a one-week revival run of 1995's Ghost in the Shell, on March 24. Almost-human, yet otherworldly: robots, cyborgs, and vessels of artificial intelligence are the vanguard of technological development; liminal beings between the scientific and the imaginary; the mechanical and the biological. Inspiring equal parts wonderment and dread, they have always occupied a special place in moving images, providing creative fodder for some of the most inventive films ever made. This program contemplates the ever-encroaching future moment when artificial superintelligence will overtake human intelligence—known as the coming Singularity—with films spanning ninety years of moving image history.

Titles include: Level Five (Chris Marker/1997/DCP), Metropolis (Fritz Lang/1927/DCP), Alphaville (Jean-Luc Godard/1965/35mm), 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick/1968/35mm), Blade Runner (Ridley Scott/1982/DCP), The Matrix (Lana Wachowski & Lilly Wachowski/1999/35mm), Evangelion: 1.1 You Are (Not) Alone (Masayuki & Kazuya Tsurumaki/2007/DCP), Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale/1935/35mm), Ex Machina (Alex Garland/2015/DCP), RoboCop (Paul Verhoeven/1987/35mm), Resident Evil: Retribution 3D (Paul W.S. Anderson/2012/DCP), 2046 (Wong Kar-Wai/2004/35mm), A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (Steven Spielberg/2001/35mm), Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (Shinichirō Watanabe/2001/DCP), Dark Star (John Carpenter/1974/35mm), The Terminator (James Cameron/1984/35mm), Teknolust (Lynn Hershman-Leeson/2002/35mm), and Demon Seed (Donald Cammell/1977/35mm). An experimental sidebar program to be announced soon.
