The Sundance 2022 The Curtain Raiser

Last Wednesday I had a horrible realization, I was a week away from Sundance and light years behind where I should be.

This is going to be brief because I am behind and because Sundance doesn’t need an introduction. Sundance is the first major festival of the year and it is the launching pad for numerous films that will be in the Oscar mix next year. It’s the place where all the films everyone will be talking about start.

This year, like last year the festival had gone virtual with all of the films available for viewing across the country and the world. And like last year I’ll be wading in with a lot of reviews starting on the 20th and continuing until I run out of things to see.

Normally at this point I list a bunch of films you should see but because I’m behind I don’t have as many as I would liked. Yes I have seen a ton of shorts, but I’m behind on features. The features only just started flowing in when the changeover to virtual happened.

While I haven’t seen a ton of films I have seen a few I recommend.

I saw NEPTUNE FROST  at the New York Film Festival. It’s a one of kind Afro-punk musical that is not for everyone, but for those that click with it it’s a film you will be talking about for weeks afterward.

TANTURA is the first great film of 2022. It’s the story of a town in Israel which is having trouble dealing with its troubled history during the war on Indpendence.

PANOLA PROJECT- a wonderful short about a woan trying to help her community

The short STARFUCKERS has one of the most arrestng performances of the year. Wow,

ᎤᏕᏲᏅ (What They’ve Been Taught) is wise beyond words. It maybe 10 minutes but it has a life time of wisdom in it. One of the best of the year as well as Sundance

STRANGER THAN ROTTERDAM one of the best films of Sundance and 2022 is about the making of STRANGER THAN PARADISE

THE DARK HEART is a true life Swedish mystery series that will suck you in. A full review isn't possible because they aren't running the whole series, however what is hear is excellent and recommended.

BRIAN AND CHARLES is an unexpected charmer. Its a hug of a film.

BLOOD is a gem of a romance with the wrong name
