Ariela Rubin on Carol and Johnny (2022) Tribeca 2022

Carol and Johnny is a documentary about two of America's most successful bank robbers. Johnny committed the longest string of bank robberies in the history of the FBI.  A total of 56 robberies. Carol acted as the getaway driver.

The documentary interviews Carol and Johnny separately. They are both now out of jail. Johnny is living in a halfway house and Carol is living with her family. They both recount their stories about the events and about each other and how they remember it. Family members and the officer involved in the case are also interviewed.

I found the documentary very interesting to learn about these two individuals. It's not every day we get to "meet" former bank robbers. One thing I will say is, Carol has had a stroke and much of her dialogue was a struggle to understand. Sometimes there were subtitles, but not always, and I wondered why the filmmaker decided to only use subtitles sometimes. I think it would have been helpful if they were always available. Otherwise, this was a unique documentary to watch.
